"Be the Dream" Rally at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida
Others envision their bank account having six digits. But, to hundreds of thousands of students across the country, they dream for something entirely different: access to a college education and a promising, productive, meaningful and creative future. This they hope they can get through the passage of the Dream Act.
There are a countless number of people who have all of the requirements to go to college. Good grades, worthy standardized test scores, involvement in their school and community… but they are missing one ever important piece of the puzzle: citizenship. To these students, it is a dream that they and other highly qualified, motivated, and eager young students receive a college or university education. Because in many states in the U.S., they are not eligible to pay in-state college tuition fees at state-funded universities, that promising future remains a dream that is far out of their reach. With the price of a college education increasing every year, the reality of undocumented students receiving a college education is quickly waning.
But there is hope! On January 18, 2012, the vision and hope of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was once again rejuvenated. A coalition of organizations, including the Farmworker Association of Florida, held the “Be the Dream” rally at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, to pledge their solidarity to these undocumented students wishing to get a higher education and pledging their support for the Dream Act. With speakers including undocumented students dreaming about an education, to the politicians writing laws in order to make the Dream Act a reality, the nearly 100 attendees made the first push for a year ahead of advocating for the passage of the Dream Act and are hoping for a year that will fulfill the American Dream of education for hundreds of thousands of students.
