Pierson Area Office

The office in Pierson was the second FWAF to open and has a long history of work in and with the rural farmworker community there. In 199?, the Catholic Diocese of Orlando assisted FWAF in purchasing the building that now houses the office. The farmworker Credit Union also has their office located in the Pierson office building and pay day finds the office very busy with community members coming for meetings, trainings and also to cash their weekly pay checks.

The main crop in the Volusia and Putnam County area – the area covered by the Pierson office – is ferns that are used in flower arrangements and that are shipped around the world. The Pierson area claims to be “The Fern Capitol of the World.” West of the busy Daytona Beach area, Pierson and the surrounding communities are quiet, rural communities that are home to miles and miles of ferneries, wooded areas, and rural towns, including Barberville, Seville, Emporia, Crescent City, and others. The majority of the population in these areas are farmworkers that work in ferneries, and some that continue to work in the dwindling citrus groves in Central Florida. Because fern work is seasonal, the majority of the workers are year-round residents in their communities and many have been working in the fern industry for as many as 5, 10, or even 20 years. This translates into a well-established community with roots in the area. A long time partnership with Stetson University in nearby Deland has resulted in on-going English-as-a-Second-Language, citizenship, and computer classes being offered to community members by Stetson students doing volunteer and service learning projects.
